V in Cursive: How to Write It
Lowercase v starts like u and then refuses to come back down. The last stroke climbs to the midline and stops. Bring it down and you have written u.

The letterforms on this page are rendered in Cedarville Cursive, an open-source font — school styles like Zaner-Bloser or D'Nealian differ in details. Treat the steps as the source of truth for stroke order; let the sample show you one possible shape.
Write it step by step
- 1Start the cursive v on the baseline and swing up to the midline, then down into one round valley.
- 2From the bottom of that valley, swing up to the right and stop at the midline.
- 3Lift. Do not retrace down. The next letter starts its own entry under that raised ending.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Coming back to the baseline. That extra downstroke is u. Stop while the pen is still high.
- A sharp point at the bottom. The valley should be as round as u.
- An ending that shoots above the midline toward the headline. v stays in the small band.

Frequently asked questions
Does cursive v connect to the next letter?
Indirectly. The letter itself ends high, and the next letter begins with a new entry stroke. There is no baseline exit the way u has. That break is normal.
Why does v turn into u when I write fast?
Speed adds the downstroke you use for every other letter. Pause at the top of the last swing until not coming down feels deliberate.
Is cursive v one stroke?
Yes. Up, down, up, lift. A printed v of two straight lines will not join from the letter before it.
