Capital T in Cursive: How to Write It

The cursive capital T is a study in economy: one gently curved stem from the top line to the baseline, finished with a small rightward curl, plus a single crossbar near the top. Learn it as a capital F without the middle bar and you've got both letters for the price of one. The sample below uses an open-source cursive font.

T

The letterforms on this page are rendered in Cedarville Cursive, an open-source font — school styles like Zaner-Bloser or D'Nealian differ in details. Treat the steps as the source of truth for stroke order; let the sample show you one possible shape.

Write it step by step

  1. 1Start at the top line and pull a slightly curved stroke down to the baseline — the curve bows gently left as it falls.
  2. 2At the baseline, finish with a small rightward curl — the foot that keeps the stem from looking planted.
  3. 3Lift the pen and add the crossbar: a short stroke across the stem just below the top line, falling slightly as it moves right, in the direction of the slant.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • A dead-straight stem. Print T is a vertical post; cursive T curves. Keep the leftward bow subtle — a millimetre or two across the letter's height — but present.
  • Crossbar at mid-height. The bar belongs near the top of the stem; drop it to the middle and the letter hovers unreadably between T and F.
  • A horizontal crossbar. The bar should fall gently to the right, matching the slant — a perfectly level bar fights the rest of the word.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a cursive T and a cursive F?

One stroke: F adds a second crossbar at mid-height. They share the curved stem and the top bar exactly, so teach your hand them as a pair — write a T, then drop the middle bar in and you've written an F.

Does a cursive capital T connect to the next letter?

Typically no. The stem's bottom curl is decorative, not an exit stroke, so the following lowercase letter starts on its own. Connecting from capitals is possible but changes the capital's shape.

Should the crossbar cross the stem or start from it?

Both appear in old penmanship books, but the school-standard form starts the bar on the stem (or just left of it) and moves right — it shouldn't poke out to the left of the stem.
