Capital B in Cursive: How to Write It

Capital B is a downstroke and two bowls, the upper one smaller than the lower. It rarely joins to the next letter. Uneven bowls are the usual tell.

B

The letterforms on this page are rendered in Cedarville Cursive, an open-source font — school styles like Zaner-Bloser or D'Nealian differ in details. Treat the steps as the source of truth for stroke order; let the sample show you one possible shape.

Write it step by step

  1. 1For capital B, pull a slightly curved stem from the headline down to the baseline.
  2. 2From the top of the stem, swing a small bowl out to the right and back to the stem at the midline.
  3. 3From that midpoint, swing a larger bowl out and back to the baseline end of the stem. Lift. B does not need an exit stroke.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Two bowls the same size. The lower bowl should be wider, or B looks like a printed block.
  • A gap so the bowls never touch the stem. Each curve has to come home.
  • A straight ruler stem. A slight bow to the left is what makes the letter look written.

Frequently asked questions

Does cursive capital B connect?

No, in ordinary school styles. The lower bowl ends on the stem. The next letter starts on its own. Forcing a join pulls the bottom bowl open.

How is capital B different from capital R?

R's lower half is a leg that leaves the stem and does not close. B's lower half is a bowl that returns. If the bottom stroke comes back, it is B.

Where does the middle of B sit?

On the midline, the same line lowercase a and c use. A middle join that sags makes the upper bowl huge and the lower one cramped.
